The world relies on a variety of energy sources. In 2018 fossil fuels, such as oil, gas and coal, were responsible for over 81 percent of the energy consumed. Renewables, like wind, solar power, hydroelectricity, and biomass, account for 14 percent. Nuclear energy is another 5 percent. Different countries have different types of energy sources, in order to balance environmental and economic requirements.
Nature is a rich source of energy in a number of forms, including sunlight as well as wind, waves oceans, and more. When harnessed, and transformed into more convenient forms of energy, like heat or electricity, these are called primary sources. When those energies are exhausted, they become non-renewable energy sources.
Many fossil fuels, as well as some of the other energy sources that are not renewable are causing harm to the environment. Mining oil, for instance is a destructive process that can destroy the forests of the earth. Fracking (hydraulic fracture) can result in water pollution and earthquakes. Carbon dioxide is released when coal is burned which contributes to global warming.
Fortunately, many of the most promising sources of energy are renewable and sustainable. Solar, wind and hydropower can, for example, generate electricity without having to dig up new sources.
Other sources of sustainable energy are emerging, such as the wave and tidal power. However, in order to be utilized in a large-scale manner they must have effective distribution networks. They need to be constructed using a source of non-renewable energy. As a result, these sources are not yet sufficient to meet the majority of our energy requirements. But it’s important be aware that prices for renewable energy equipment have decreased drastically over the last few years, and efficiency is increasing rapidly.
